We sat down with AVS CEO, Mike Loumos, to find out what remote guarding is and how it works. Here’s what he had to say.
Q: What is remote guarding?
Mike: Remote guarding is the use of surveillance cameras to monitor a property from a central command center.
There are multiple levels of remote guard monitoring. The best of which uses surveillance cameras, video analytics, and a speaker system to immediately communicate from the command center to address any unwanted activity.
Q: How does it work?
Mike: The details get a little complex, but in a nutshell, it's using an IP camera which detects irregular activity.
As soon as this happens, a signal is immediately sent to a command center where a live remote guard analyzes the live view/footage to confirm or dismiss an event. If the event is confirmed as a real event, that's when the remote guard immediately takes action from the command center to address any unwanted activity.
Q: Who will see the most benefit from using it?
Mike: The most benefit will come with any business that needs assets protected during non-business hours. This includes warehouses, storage yards, business centers, and industrial areas.
Particularly businesses that currently use security guard staffing to protect these locations. They will save hundreds, if not thousands, on their security budget.
Q: Who shouldn’t use remote guarding?
Mike: Any business that has regular visitors/customers/employees 24 hours a day.
Q: How does it compare cost-wise to other, more traditional, security options?
Mike: On average, our clients save between 35%-50% on their security budget by switching to remote guard service.
Q: Does it really work?
Mike: Absolutely! For the businesses where it fits best, it is extremely effective. When we were beta testing remote guard service with a handful of clients, we were concerned that a voice coming from a camera would be ineffective, but what we found was quite the opposite. Once you take the element of surprise away from the criminal and they realize you are monitoring them in real-time using descriptive language, their whole behavior changes.
